Review: Scary Movie (2026)

Diese Woche ist es endlich so weit: Mit Scary Movie (2026) startet der sechste und damit erste Scary Movie-Teil seit 13 Jahren in den internationalen Kinos.
Fans, Filminteressierte und auch ich waren dabei an diesem Film durchaus schon sehr früh interessiert. Bereits der erste Trailer (unten verlinkt) sorgte mit einigen saftigen Witzen und zahlreichen Anspielungen für Furore; es sollte lediglich der Startschuss einer großartigen Marketing-Kampagne werden. Dazu kommt meines Erachtens, dass Scary Movie als Spoof-Filmreihe an der Seite von Die Nackte Kanone und den Hot Shots!-Filmen in eine Art von Film gehört, die ihren Zenit scheinbar schon lange überschritten hat. Gleichzeitig scheint es in unserer durchaus tristen Zeit jedoch einen Markt für Hirn-Aus-Klamaukfilme zu geben; das deutete sich zumindest im nicht ganz unerfolgreichen, aber zugegeben auch nicht bombastischen Einspielergebnis von Die Nackte Kanone (2025) an.
Und wenn ich das noch hinzufügen darf: Sogar bei guten Meta-Horrorfilmen gibt es eine Lücke, denn während alle neuen Scream-Filme seit Teil 4 meines Erachtens schlecht sind (hier ist mein Ranking zur den Scream-Filmen), sind mit jedem neueren Teil auch mehr und mehr die Meta-Gags und Anspielungen verloren gegangen, ehe Scream 7 sich dieses Jahr nur noch mit sich selbst beschäftigte.
Es gibt also zwei Marktlücken, die Scary Movie (2026) potenziell schließen könnte: Gute Hirn-Aus-Komödien und gute Horror-Parodien. Ob er das geschafft hat, bespreche ich in diesem Artikel. Eine Review.
Kritik
Um zu Beginn gleich auf den Punkt zu kommen: Der Film macht Spaß und hat meine vorsichtig-positiven Erwartungen absolut erfüllt! Der Grund, wieso ich das direkt im ersten Satz der Kritik sage, ist dass auch der Film selbst bereits in den ersten Minuten seiner Laufzeit klar macht, wie der Grundton und die Gag-Dichte aussieht.
Die erste Szene ist eine Parodie der Eröffnungsszene von Scream 6 (2023) und wie gut die einem gefällt, dürfte ein Riesen-Indikator dafür sein, wie man den Film insgesamt findet.
Generell ist es absolut beeindruckend, wie viele Filme hier aufs Korn genommen werden; Scary Movie (2026) bleibt dabei grundsätzlich seinen Wurzeln treu und arbeitet sich in erster Linie an den (neuen) Scream-Filmen ab. Da ich die Scream-Filme der letzten Jahre (wie bereits gesagt) nicht mochte, war diese Parodie für mich tatsächlich unterhaltsamer, als das Original. Wo Scream (2022) aber schon nach ein bisschen Name-Dropping schlapp macht, legt Scary Movie erst so richtig los. Jeder, der in den letzten zehn Jahren auch nur einen Horror-Film gesehen hat, darf davon ausgehen, dass dieser hier nicht nur erwähnt wird, sondern absolut sein Fett weg bekommt. Die Anzahl der Filme, die hier in einer Laufzeit von knapp über 90 Minuten parodiert werden, ist schlichtweg rekordverdächtig.
Dabei hört der Film bei Horrorfilmen lange nicht auf; alle Genres, selbst Animationsfilme, werden hier ordentlich durch den Kakao gezogen. Und ratet mal: Auch hier sind wir noch nicht am Ende, denn der Film thematisiert nicht nur den Zustand der Filmwelt, sondern auch den der realen Welt. Gesellschaftliche und politische Themen werden hier dabei so dargestellt, und das ist durchaus eine Meisterleistung, dass sie stets nur ein Gag bleiben, ohne in irgendeiner Form zu einer politischen Aussage zu werden. Der Film spricht einerseits also politische Themen an, macht es aber auf so eine herrlich-dumme Art und Weise, dass er dabei dennoch unpolitisch bleibt. Das kann man natürlich finden, wie man mag; für meinen Geschmack war es genau das Richtige.
Diese Aktualität wirkt extrem frisch und lässt den Film erscheinen, als wäre er erst letzte Woche fertig gestellt worden (auf eine gute Art, nicht auf eine gehetzte), hat aber natürlich auch den Nachteil, dass er wirklich sehr Kind seiner Zeit ist. Entsprechend bleibt abzuwarten, wie gut der Film noch in zehn oder zwanzig Jahren anzusehen sein wird. Einige Gags dürften dann nicht mehr zünden, aber es ist trotzdem schön, dass wir mit Scary Movie (2026) eine echte filmische wie auch gesellschaftliche Zeitkapsel der 2020er bekommen haben.
Zeitloser dürften die Figuren sein, denn diese haben im Jahr 2000 beim ersten Scary Movie (übrigens der einzige Film, den ich aus dieser Reihe sonst noch gesehen habe) bereits funktioniert, und tun es noch immer! Anna Farris als Cindy Campbell sowie Marlon Wayans als Shorty Meeks spielen ihre Rollen wieder hervorragend, wenngleich Dave Sheridan als Doofie hier wieder einmal allen anderen die Show stielt. Das einzige Problem ist, dass er mir hier (genau wie Dewie in den Scream (2022)) hier etwas zu kurz kommt, aber jeder einzelne Gag mit ihm war großartig und hat den vollen Kinosaal, in dem ich den Film sehen konnte, in schallerndes Gelächter versetzt.
Ok, denkt man sich jetzt vielleicht, aber das klingt doch alles viel zu schön, um wahr zu sein. Und natürlich gibt es auch einiges, was man an dem Film kritisieren kann. Das Ende zum Beispiel, das ich natürlich nicht verraten werde, ist eigentlich ganz cool, hat aber Momente drin, wo Leute in einen Meta-Dialog verfallen, den ich persönlich überhaupt nicht verstanden habe (und da ging es glaube ich allen so, denn das waren die einzigen zwei Minuten im Kinosaal, wo niemand gelacht hat). Ich glaube, es ging da um Dinge, die man entweder nur als Hardcore-Fan von Scary Movie 3 und 4 versteht (und mal ehrlich: Wie viele davon gibt es?) oder aber sich vor allem an ein amerikanisches Publikum richten. Das fand ich schade, weil der Film bis auf diese Szene zum Schluss herrlich international war.
Aber ganz ehrlich: Das war es im Großen und Ganzen schon! Ansonsten habe ich an dem Film eigentlich gar nichts auszusetzen, was hier jetzt groß erwähnenswert wäre. Es zünden genug Gags, es sind großartige Anspielungen dabei, es wird teils hervorragend mit Erwartungen gespielt… mit anderen Worten: Scary Movie (2026) ist tatsächlich eine gute Hirn-Aus-Komödie, eine großartige Horror-Parodie und wahrscheinlich genau auf die Art und Weise gemacht, wie ein Spoof-Film heutzutage sein sollte. Jeder, der nach meiner Review Lust auf den Film bekommen hat, dürfte damit extrem kurzweilige und unterhaltsame 90 Minuten verbringen. Vielleicht nicht mehr, aber sicherlich auch nicht weniger!

A Scary Movie (2026) Review.
The week is finally here: With Scary Movie (2026), the sixth installment—and the first Scary Movie film in 13 years—hits international theaters.
Fans, cinephiles, and I alike have been highly intrigued by this project for quite some time. The very first trailer (linked below) already caused quite a stir with its juicy jokes and numerous pop-culture references; it proved to be merely the kick-off for an amazing marketing campaign. On top of that, it’s worth noting that Scary Movie, alongside classics like The Naked Gun and Hot Shots!, belongs to a spoof genre that seemingly past its prime a long time ago. At the same time, however, there appears to be a genuine market for turn-your-brain-off slapstick in our rather dreary times; at least, that was at least hinted at by the box office results of The Naked Gun (2025), which were not entirely unsuccessful, though admittedly not blockbuster material either.
And if I may add: There is even a gap when it comes to good meta-horror films. While every new Scream movie since Scream 4 has been poor in my opinion (here is my Scream movie ranking), the meta-gags and references have also faded more and more with each new installment, leading up to Scream 7 this year, which was solely preoccupied with itself.
So, there are two market gaps that Scary Movie (2026) could potentially fill: good, turn-your-brain-off comedies and good horror parodies. Whether it succeeded in doing so is what I will discuss in this article. A review.
Review
To get straight to the point right from the start: The film is a blast and absolutely lived up to my cautiously optimistic expectations! The reason I’m stating this in the very first sentence of the review is that the movie itself makes its overall tone and gag density crystal clear within its first few minutes.
The opening scene is a parody of the first sequence in Scream VI (2023), and how much you enjoy it will likely be a massive indicator of how you’ll feel about the film as a whole.
Generally speaking, it is absolutely impressive just how many movies are being roasted here; Scary Movie (2026) remains fundamentally true to its roots and primarily takes aim at the (recent) Scream films. Since I didn’t care for the Scream movies of recent years (as previously mentioned), this parody was actually more entertaining to me than the original. But where Scream (2022) already loses steam after a bit of name-dropping, Scary Movie is just getting started. Anyone who has seen even a single horror flick in the last ten years can expect it to not only be mentioned here, but to get absolutely ripped apart. The sheer volume of films parodied within a runtime of just over 90 minutes is nothing short of record-breaking.
And the film doesn’t stop at horror movies by a long shot; all genres, even animated films, get properly dragged through the mud. But guess what: we’re still not at the end of the line, because the movie doesn’t just address the state of the film industry, but also that of the real world. Social and political topics are presented in a way—and this is quite a masterpiece in itself—that they always remain strictly a gag, without turning into a political statement of any kind. So on one hand, the film tackles political issues, but it does so in such a delightfully stupid manner that it still manages to stay unpolitical. You can feel about that however you like; for my taste, it was exactly the right approach.
This relevance feels incredibly fresh and makes the movie seem as if it were finished just last week (in a good way, not a rushed one). Naturally, though, this also comes with the downside of it being very much a product of its time. Consequently, it remains to be seen how well the film will hold up in ten or twenty years. Some of the gags probably won’t land anymore by then, but it’s still wonderful that with Scary Movie (2026), we’ve received a true cinematic and cultural time capsule of the 2020s.
The characters will likely prove to be more timeless, as they already worked back in 2000 with the first Scary Movie (which, by the way, is the only other film in the franchise I’ve actually seen) and they still do today! Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell and Marlon Wayans as Shorty Meeks reprise their roles brilliantly, though Dave Sheridan as Doofie once again steals the show from everyone else. My only grievance is that his screen time felt a bit too short here—much like Dewey in Scream (2022)—but every single gag featuring him was fantastic and left the packed theater I watched the film in roaring with laughter.
‘Okay,’ you might be thinking by now, ‘but this all sounds way too good to be true.’ And of course, there are certainly things to criticize about the movie. The ending, for instance—which I obviously won’t spoil—is actually pretty cool, but it contains moments where characters lapse into a meta-dialogue that I personally didn’t understand at all. And I think everyone else felt the same way, as those were the only two minutes in the entire theater where nobody laughed. I suspect it was about inside jokes that you either only get if you’re a hardcore fan of Scary Movie 3 and 4 (and let’s be honest: how many of those are there?) or that were primarily aimed at an American audience. I found that a pity, because up until that scene at the very end, the film was wonderfully international.
But honestly: that’s pretty much it! Other than that, I really don’t have anything negative to say about the film that would be worth mentioning here. Enough of the gags land, there are great references, and it brilliantly subverts expectations at times… in other words: Scary Movie (2026) is indeed a good turn-your-brain-off comedy, a great horror parody, and probably made exactly the way a spoof movie should be made nowadays. Anyone who feels like watching the movie after reading my review will likely spend an extremely fast-paced and entertaining 90 minutes. Maybe nothing more, but certainly nothing less!

Well, these aren't the types of films I go to the cinema for, but I'm glad you met the experience with such enthusiasm! Fact, you got me a little curious. Another fact: I think the very first one is also the only part of the franchise I saw in full.
